Five dead in weekend accidents
Five people were killed in Panama highway traffic accidents involving speed and drink on the weekend.
On the Pan-American Highway, at Agua Fría in the province of Darién, Yariela De Leon, a lawyer who was a passenger in a pickup taxi was killed when a sedan left its lane and collided head-on with the taxi. The sedan driver who had been drinking died at the scene and the taxi driver is in serious condition in hospital
In Palo Alto, in the township of December 24, Salen Keller Rubio died after the vehicle in which he was traveling with his brother and some friends collided with a power line.
Witnesses reported that the driver was on the shoulder of the road and when he tried to get into the lane, again, another car hit him and he lost control, spun several times until he hit the post and was overturned.
Firemen reported that at the time of the accident, a honeycomb fell on the car and bees began to sting the four occupants. They were rescued by the fire brigade and 911 paramedics and transferred to the emergency room of the Santo Tomás Hospital where Luis Manuel Rodríguez, 20, was put on a life support machine, but he was later pronounced brain dead and the machine was disconnected.
A speeding driver was killed after overturning on the Panama-American Highway on Sunday afternoon.
