Panama president claims social peace

Panama ’s current administration has focused on maintaining social peace in the last four years according to President Juan Carlos Varela who told rebellious lawmakers in the National Assembly on Sunday, Jul. 1: “We live in a different country, in a country of laws, of order, of respect for authorities and those who cross the line know that they will have to face justice,” he said.

He acknowledged that he has differences with the National Assembly, but nothing prevents them from finding ways to continue with “the harmonic collaboration between the State Bodies, in this electoral year.

He called on the deputies to return to the State agenda of the first years  “The Panamanian people deserve that we work for their interests and political differences are left for the polls, “he said.

In his opinion, the electoral reforms that were approved last year will allow a  more just campaign more with equal conditions for all candidates.

Varela also confirmed an upcoming constituent assembly, and that he will be meeting with civil and political groups to prepare a roadmap.

For his fifth and final year, he announced  some upcoming “important economic news”

like the  August opening of the first gas plant in the city of Colón, an investment of over $1 billion dollars. In January 2019 will be the World Youth Day (WYD) which will be “a great event for the country and the region. ” Line 2 of the Metro will finish in January 2019 and will be fully operational in April. And a goal of 3 million tourists is expected for that year.
