OPINION: Avoiding a Martinelli circus
In the history of the country, a former president rarely faces a process for acts performed during his administration. What is involved here is the rendering of accounts for the commission of alleged crimes, which involve important human rights of businessmen, 150 trade unionists, politicians, journalists, leaders of civil society and citizens who became victims, and whose privacy was mocked and vilified.
Although only a handful of them wanted to be part of the process, there are many more families who suffered an unforgivable violation of their rights. While all the guarantees of the inmate brought from Miami must be respected the victims should be given their guardianship, and the country should be guaranteed that there is no impunity.
The Supreme Court should not allow this to become a circus. and respect for legality and the rule of law are key tasks that the Court must comply with to defend the future of Panama. This process must be done without hesitation about its legitimacy.
