OPINION: An Independent Republic of Thieves

Yesterday, the National Assembly declared itself as an independent republic to which the laws of the Panamanian State cannot be applied.

With the greatest brazenness and cynicism the auditors of the Comptroller General’s Office were denied access at the same time as an amparo of Constitutional Law guarantees was filed, both measures aimed at achieving the same purpose: to avoid accountability of the millions of dollars that each of the deputies spends at his whim. The old adage that “he who owes nothing fears nothing”  has never been more true. Although the specific details are not known, it is obvious that the collective of the deputies, of all parties, tries to conceal what could elegantly be called a robbery. With their performance yesterday, it’s clear that the deputies have become budget raiders state and, therefore, our taxes.
