Tourism drivers issue Uber ultimatum
VEHICLE OPERATORS in the tourism sector have given the Transport Authority (ATTT) 24 hours to stop the service offered by the Uber platform in commercial centers, hotels and airports in the country.
Uber cars can be seen standing in line like taxis near Tocumen International Airport, awaiting calls from customers. Their rates are higher than those charged by authorized vehicles parked outside of the arrivals terminal. They may also be seen in other commercial locations.
The announcement was made on Monday, April 15, following a caravan on Avenida Balboa of vehicles catering to tourists . If the demand is not met by the ATTT tourism workers said they will continue their street protests daily.
Taxi owners have also carried out protests and blocked srteets, describing Uber drivers as pirates, who now accept cash instead of credit cards.
