OPINION: $318 million theft just tip of the iceberg

IN AN UNPRECEDENTED frenzy of construction, the last government contracted at least $1.9 billion in projects, many of them awarded under the umbrella of the Ministry of Public Works.
According to the first audits carried out by the Comptroller General of the Republic, five of these works had a possible overrun of $318 million. We now need to support the Attorney General’s Office to recover these funds. We must demand that all works be audited in order to eliminate the criminal contractors and political party organizations who assault the treasury and steal the property of all Panamanians.
