UPDATE: Fugitive lawyer linked to Martinelli sons caught in Mexico
FUGITIVE Panama lawyer Evelyn Ivette Vargas Reynaga, wanted on an Interpol red alert along with ex-president Ricardo Martinelli’s two sons, was arrested in Mexico on Tuesday Feb.22.
Vargas Reynaga, and Martinelli’s sons are accused of money laundering in the Odebrecht bribery case.
She arrived at Panama’s Tocumen International Airport in Panama at 10 38 am, wearing jeans dark glasses and handcuffs hidden under a sweater, and was transferred to the special anti-corruption prosecutor’s office on Via Espana.
The Interpol red alert was issued on Feb.14 to locate both Vargas Reynaga and the brothers Luis Enrique and Ricardo Alberto Martinelli Linares,
sons of former Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli.
The brothers are investigated by the Public Ministr (MP) after Swiss prosecutors accused them of bribery and money laundering, and froze accounts of $22 million.
Prosecutors suspect – based on banking transactions – that the money was paid by Odebrecht.
Vargas Reynaga is related because, according to the investigations, she managed five companies with accounts in banks in Switzerland, where the Martinelli Linares brothers appear as benefited jointly or separately.
From Miami, the Martinelli Linares sons recently issued a notarized statement
disassociating themselves from the Promoter and Development Los Andes S.A., a company under investigation by the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, of bribes paid by Odebrecht to Panama officials Between 2010 and 2014.
