MEDIA WATCH: Absolute transparency needed from Varela
La Prensa Feb. 10.
FINALLY the consequences of the Lava Jato operation are beginning to be felt strongly in the country.
The Office of the Attorney General said that several investigations are being conducted in this case and
yesterday [Thursday] made one of them public, with the linking Mossack Fonseca to what appears to be a money laundering operation, according to prosecutors.
This led to one of the Partners of the firm – ex-secretary of the current government and former president of the party in power – to make serious allegations, asserting that the Odebrecht company made contributions to the election campaign of President Juan Carlos Varela.
Addressing the country on TV the ruler not only denied the accusations but promised to disclose the list of donors to the Electoral Tribunal.
In view of the seriousness of the facts investigated by the Public Ministry, it is for citizens to act with prudence and responsibility, demanding transparency and accountability from the results of the investigation and be aware that those involved who must be accountable to justice, do not use distractions to hide their criminal acts.
To not do so would have serious repercussions for the institution of the State.
This is one of those moments in which serenity is required, for the sake of our democracy.
And you Mr President, must act with absolute transparency and determination to clarify the accusations formated against you
