Varela to attend Castro funeral
PRESIDENT Juan Carlos Varela, will attend the funeral of Fidel Castro on Wednesday Nov. 30.
Varela along with most Latin American leaders has taken an approach to the death of Castro at odds with that of US President elect Donald Trump.
Castro is recognized throughout Latin America as the man who led the fight for the 1959 overthrow the US supported Batista dictatorship in Cuba, and for over 50 years survived a US embargo while providing medical, cultural and educational benefits to countries in the Caribbean and across the sub-continent
The trip was announced by Varela during an event in Boquete on Monday, November 28.
Foreign Minister and Vice President Isabel de Saint Malo de Alvarado will also attend.
Varela has sent condolences to the Cuban people for the death of Castro, who was in power over the last five decades.
“Our solidarity and condolences to the people and government of Cuba for their loss,” said the note.
Fidel Castro died on Friday, and while Varela spoke in Boquete, thousands of Cubans gathered in Havana to witness a 21 gun salute and to mourn Castro’s death.
