OPINION: Rethink needed on Cascos iron curtains

La Prensa, Nov.20

NO ONE DOUBTS doubts that the President of the Republic and the seat of the Executive, located in the Old Town of San Felipe,   a Unesco, world heritage site   require an effective and adequate security by the Institutional Protection Service.(SIP).

However, this reality should not serve as a pretext for insisting on an initiative that could challenge or question standards of preservation of the historic heritage or the safety of neighbors and visitors.

The installation of 10 sets of gates to wall access to the Palace of the Herons in the Old Town, includes two bases or new structures to install these iron walls  in Avenue B, one of the exits of the Old Town and the main artery of the historic city.

Therefore, the most prudent thing is for authorities to better analyze security options, consult with experts and the community before putting more discordant elements in an area that not only has value for Panamanians, but for the whole world, as Unesco has rightly pointed out.
