Media sanctions clause dropped from women’s protection bill

A LAW strengthening  protections for women will go ahead but will no longer  include  a provision for regulating the media.

The announcement came from Minister of Government Milton Henríquez,at a press conference on Tuesday, November 8.

Article 70 of the law had proposed punishing media with a fine for publishing anything that could be construed as an attack on women.

The law was modified after it was widely criticized for being an attack on press freedom.

The minister said that other laws that may contain similar articles will also be changed.

According to the minister, the role of settling disputes will remain with the courts.

“I think that we all agree to defend the freedom of expression,” said Henriquez.
