Basic food prices fall

THE PRICES  of over half  the items that make up the Panama  food basket fell during the month of August.

A report of the Ministry of Economy and Finance said that the prices of 52.5 percent of the foods that make up the basic basket were down.

According to the report, the cost of the food basket, which includes 59 staple foods, fell $2.67 from July to August. The current monthly price is $309.41.

Among the products that were cheaper were onions, yams, cabbage, lettuce and sweet peppers,

There were 23 foods that went up in price, including bananas, pineapples, lentils, ground beef and dehydrated soup.
