Lake Gatun reaches flood level
LAKE GATUN,which earlier in the year fell to levels that restricted the capacity of some ships passing through the Panama Canal, is now at flood level.
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has announced that the Lake reached its maximum level, so in the next few days water will be removed from it to lessen the danger of flooding and the ensure the safe operation of the Panama Canal locks.
“People using the lake should be alert to the sound of sirens that indicate an impending water release,” said an ACP press release.
The institution explained that the lake has reached its maximum operating level of 87.50 feet, while the Alajuela Reservoir will reach its limit in the coming days.
