Justice system ignores those culpable in 18 deaths
LAWYERS representing Carlos Gavilanes, victims of the La Cresta bus fire, 10 years ago said that the justice system has ignored many of the parties to blame for the incident that left 18 people dead and a number of others severely injured.
Carlos Gavilanes, argued that only the driver and the owner of the bus have been prosecuted, and the bus manufacturer and the manufacturer of the parts that caused the fire were allowed to avoid justice.
He also expressed concern that the government has not been held liable despite the extremely poor condition of the country’s public transportation system.
“It is important to point out that in the 10 demands that I have presented to the Supreme Court, the state has never been held liable,” he said.
Another lawyer for the victims, Víctor Martínez, said that the state has turned its back on the victims, who are now seeking justice abroad.
There is a civil suit pending in Houston, Texas.
