Raid on Mossack Fonseca ruled legal

A RAID  BY  organized crime prosecutor Javier Caraballo on the headquarters of Panama law firm Mossack Fonseca, has been declared legal.

The Seventh Special Tenth Court has ruled that an objection to the April 13  raised  by a lawyer for the law firm  was “not proven.”

The raid was carried out for data on the possible use of the firm to “conceal or promote illegal activities” after a global journalistic investigation that would have uncovered alleged irregular practices of offshore companies through the firm, was disclosed.

Guillermina McDonald, a lawyer for Mossack Fonseca, claimed that the  the search warrant breached the  inviolability of the home privacy and confidentiality of communications and correspondence” of the firm.

The Court declared “not proven” the incident raised by McDonald, according to  the Attorney General’s Office.

The prosecutor Javier Caraballo led the raid, which lasted 27 hours without interruption.

Caraballo said the case is still in the research period. If the defense appealed, the appeal must be resolved by the Second Superior Court.
