Trucks, taxis close corridors
DEMONSTRATING dump truck and taxi drivers caused major traffic jams across Panama city on Tuesday morning, September 27, when they blocked sections of both Corridors.
Truckers were protesting the “thoughtless” toll increase in the corridors, and the lack of maintenance of the highways while taxi drivers complained about what they consider “illegal” Uber service in the country.
Two truck drivers on the South Corridor were detained by agents of the National Police but were released when the protestors stopped the blockage leading to Tocumen
“The authorities repress us, but do nothing to end Uber piracy” said Rafael Reyes, leader of the participating taxi drivers
The entrance to the northern corridor, on December 24, was blocked by trucks. Truckers said that in the past they have talked with officials about their claims, but there has been no response.
