Cascos walkabout Sundays nixed
THE LOUDLY hailed “pedestrians only” Sundays in Casco Viejo have sputtered out and after a public consultation have been suspended.
After 100 people including residents, merchants and officials, were interviewed the program was deemed to be unfeasible. This was said to be due to the lack of amenities, such as public toilets, and the manpower needed to block off the streets.
The initiative was started by the mayor’s office in March. Its aim was to promote the area as a tourist attraction.
The office said it will focus on future events to bring more people to the area, including exhibitions, outdoor theatre, festivals and street fairs, much of which has been going on for years.
