Ecuador investigating Noriega
ECUADOR has opened an investigation of former Panama dictator Manuel Antonio Noriega, confirmed that his client opened an investigation in Ecuadorover the death in 1986 of Fausto Arturo Jarrin, leader of the defunct guerrilla group Alfaro Vive Carajo.
Noriega’s lawyer said the ex-general has already been notified by the Attorney General of Ecuador in charge of the case.
According to the prosecution, a protected witness testified that Noriega had ordered the arrest of Jarrin in Panama and surrendered to the authorities of Ecuador. It is an investigation into crimes against humanity invoving crimes of illegal detention, torture and extrajudicial killings the prosecution said in a statement.
Noriega is currently imprisoned in El Renacer, where he is serving sentences for the death of Dr. Hugo Spadafora in September 1985 and the episode known as the Massacre of Albrook in October 1989. He has been behind bars since he was captured during the 1989 US invasion.
He is also awaiting trial in Panama for the murder of a local union activist.
