Electoral College confirms new University rector
AFTER 19 years, Gustavo García de Paredes, the controversial rector of the University of Panama is heading for the door after his last attempt at clinging to power was blocked
On Monday July 4 the electoral college of the University proclaimed that Eduardo Flores had won last week’s election to replace him.
He leaves under a cloud with investigations continuing into alleged irregularities in the University Foundation he created and ran.
The results were certified by the college, consisting of 15 deans and nine directors of regional campuses.
According to the official results, Flores received 52.82 percent of the votes, followed by Justo Medrano with 36.66 percent. In third place was Argentina Ying with 3.69 percent.
Nicolás Jerome, Gilberto Boutin and Dorindo Cortez all received between 2 and 3 percent.
