Elephant tusks seized at airport
SIX ELEPHANT TUSKS that arrived at the Tocumen International Airport, cargo section have been seized by Panama’s National Customs Authority.
According to information disclosed by the institution the tusks were bound for for Mexico City.
“The ivory tusks were packed in wooden boxes, and were detected through verification profile and were retained after verifying the documentation to confirm whether they have legal permits to export species protected by environmental protection agencies” said a statement issued by the customs authority
The tusks have been transferred to the Ministry of Environment for safekeeping.
Large amounts of elephant tusks were recently publicly burned in Kenya, part of an ongoing battle to deter poachers who are rapidly reducing the world’s elephant population.
