Move to rename Plaza de Francia
SUNDAY, MAY 15 marked the 113th anniversary of the death by firing squad of an indigenous leader in Plaza Chiriqui now known as Plaza De Francia in Casco Viejo. and a local group wants the square renamed to commemorate his sacrifice.
Victoriano Lorenzo who fought against the injustices of Colombian power in Panama. The movement, “Patria Verde” plans to push to have the area renamed Plaza Victoriano Lorenzo.
The Plaza is home to the French Embassy and a statue of Ferdinand de Lesseps builder of the Suez Canal, who started the Panama Canal,, later finished by the United States.
Carlos Rubio, a founding member of Patri Verde , told La Estrella de Panama that the place where a national hero was shot should bear his name. He believes Lorenzo had an unfair trial and his death should not be neglected.
Rubio said Patria Verde will present a preliminary draft law for the renaming of Plaza de Francia.
