Varela facing supporter backlash
PANAMA PRESIDENT Juan Carlos Varela, was savaged in a weekend statement from a high profile group that strongly supported his government in the Panama Spring following the Martinelli administration.
The Independent Movement for Panama (Movin) said in a statement that “The government of Juan Carlos Varela and the National Assembly have failed to meet the best interests of the country, and have disappointed the expectations of transparency of the population.
“Movin insists that the state administration requires a profound transformation in order to achieve the levels of transparency and efficiency in the services it provides to its citizens,” the statement said,
The group questioned the fact that the Government and the Assembly failed to endorse the proposal that sought to disable in State contracts foreign companies, convicted abroad for acts of corruption.
It blamed the administration for “Losing the opportunity to push for a law that satisfies the requirements of good governance including other things, not agreeing to disable companies that have been sanctioned for corrupt practices, here or abroad “the movement through a statement.
“Movin insists that the state administration requires a profound transformation in order to achieve the levels of transparency and efficiency in the services it provides to its citizens,” the statement said,
According to the group, bringing about change is and must be a “permanent task” and in which citizens as well as political parties and new actors in national life “must commit to the necessary action.”
