OFF THE CUFF: Deputies running out of time
PANAMA’S legislators true to the world’s political ilk are faster at packing up for time off than attending to business, and are running out of time to complete their projected work load.
Less than a month remains in the current session of the National Assembly and it appears unlikely it will complete all the items on the agenda reports La Prensa,
It has not yet discussed the amendments to the Electoral Code due to differences between the various legislative caucuses on various points of the bill.
President of the Assembly Ruben De Leon said that he expects the draft electoral reforms to be approved before April 30
“They must pass soon to have the rules in place for the elections of 2019,” he said.
Another legislative initiative is the amendments to the Public Procurement Act.
The project was endorsed on first debate Thursday after a period of consultations with various sectors, and is expected to be introduced on second debate this week.
Also on the agenda for second debate are amendments to the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code that seek to reduce levels of overcrowding in prisons
