983 child porn reports in Panama
RETWEETING a photo or video of children in sexual activities could lead to a 5 to 10 year jail sentence, more if the child is under 14 years of age warns Panama’s Attorney General’s Office.
In 2015, there were 983 reports of the criminal activity in Panama according to the Human Rights Report.
Often, people use social networks to distribute photos and videos says first circuit prosecutor Katya Melendez, and told La Prensa that spreading this type of material by Twitter is a crime, including just retweeting.
“Any form of sending child pornography is a crime. Whoever manufactures, prepares, by any means or produce pornographic material or offers, trades, displays, publishes, publicizes, disseminates or distributes via internet or any mass media or national or international information, presenting or representing virtually one or more minors in sexual activities, whether real or simulated, shall be punished with imprisonment from 5 to 10 years,” she said .
The penalty will be 10 to 15 years in prison if the victim is a person under 14 years.
The Public Ministry also pointed out that even if it is not distributed, those who possess child pornography, voluntarily acquired, shall be punished with imprisonment of three to five years.
