Zica virus alert continues as cases reach 111

AT LEAST  111 people were reported suffering from the Zica virus, on Friday March 4, up from 95 a day earlier  and the first case of the Guillain-Barre  neurological syndrome  was identified.

It  appeared in a 50 years-old man, diagnosed with a mild  paralysis associated with the syndrome.

The Director General of Health, Itza Barahona de Mosca, said that the patient was promptly attended to by social insurance (CSS) and  given treatment and medication. The antibodies reacted well and he is recovering but, Barahona warned, “there may be other cases.”

She said that thesyndrome does not occur in all patients at the same level of  because there is a type that causes mild paralysis and one that causes severe respiratory paralysis requiring intensive care.The current  patient was unable to  walk and  tests  showed  he was infected by the Zika virus.

New  Zika cases of have been detected in Betania, Juan Diaz,  San Francisco, Veracruz, Gorgon, La Mitra   and El Tecal in Panama West  and Sabanitas in Colon province.
