Social security stands fast on ambulance deal
PANAMA’S Social Security (CSS) is standing fast on its plan to lease 97 ambulances for $24 million.
During a public forum in Aguadulce, Social Security officials defended the decision, saying it will improve ambulance service across the country.
Kathia Ochoa, head of the agency’s Department of Emergency Management, said they currently have 28 ambulances. The agency does not have the resources to maintain a fleet and maintenance would be included in the contract.
Sergio Alemán, finance director of Social Security, said that the agency currently faces long delays in the repairs to its existing vehicles.
The cost of leasing the ambulances will be about $20 million, and the maintenance will be about $4 million.
Some sectors such as the National Medical Negotiating Commission, have questioned the agreement.
