Ex-PAN boss questioned on First Lady food contract
FORMER National Assistance Program (PAN) Director Rafael Guardia Jaén emerged from his cell in El Renacer prison to answer questions about a $5 million contract for Christmas food bags distributed by provided to the Office of Marta Martinelli, the First Lady during the administration of her husband, then president, Ricardo Martinelli.
The Prosecutor’s Office seeks to determine if there was a misappropriation of funds in the purchase of the bags.
According to Prosecutor Tania Sterling, the case revolves around a contract signed in 2013 by Guardia Jaén, to purchase the bags which were distributed by the former First Lady in all the provinces and regions of the country. In previous cases involving PAN contracts Guardia Jaen has testified that he was acting on orders from Martinelli,
