MEDIA WATCH: Varela gloss dims as broken promises mount

“JOURNALISM is talk back to power” So understand our craft says Marty Baron, the current editor of the award winning Washington Post. That is the task of the media: to tell the truth to power.
Like Ricardo Martinelli, Juan Carlos Varela has broken his campaign promises. Nepotism, influence peddling, direct contracting, conflicts of interest and the full gamut of actions that shape the venal encyclopedia of ignominy and impunity that offends Panamanians, wherever they come from. When we question the public behavior of our current leaders, it is because we expected a profound change in the management and culture of public affairs.
The National Assistance Program and all that it entailed had to be finished on July 2 2014. For the cynics, power does not corrupt, but it shows the true nature of men. We kept the hope in those who promised a new way of governing. Time and space for the benefit of the doubt in favor of the current government have shortened rapidly. That news cannot ignore the political class.
