New Tocumen terminal will double capacity

ADDITIONAL work requested by Tocumen, S.A. the public company that manages Tocumen International  will cost   between  $80 million and $100 million above the original  $800 million contract with the Brazilian company Norberto Odebrecht for the construction of a second terminal. which will double the airport’s capacity. 

The two companies  will discuss an agreement to expand the contract on  Wednesday Jan.13 .

The deal was announced by Comptroller Federico Humbert, who toured the project Tuesday.

The additional work

includes a bridge that will join the current building with the new terminal and an expanded baggage handling system.

During the tour, the comptroller indicated that he will not sign the addendum if it is not properly justified.

“No addendum has validity if it is not endorsed by the comptroller,” he said.

The project is 64 percent finished and should be ready in 2017. The new terminal will allow the airport to handle 20 million passengers a year, almost double the current capacity at what is known  as The Hub of the Americas
