Catfish withdrawn from outlets across country
PANAMA’S FOOD SAFETY authority (Aupsa) has ordered the removal of catfish fillets from all supermarkets in the country.
An Aupsa press release said that the measure is due to the recent discovery of contamination with the bacteria Vibro cholera. “Routine testing of fish from Vietnam known as Bassa Bassa or bagr fillet detected bacterium Vibrio cholera. Although production of the toxin that causes cholera was discounted , health authorities decided on the temporary withdrawal of the fish at the national level” saidAupsa.
“The measure will stay in force until the authorities of the exporting country clarify the situation and provide additional scientific evidence that the product poses no danger to health. If for some reason someone has ingested this type of product in its raw form, he or she will not develop cholera. We reiterate that the strain detected is not capable of producing the disease” said the release
