Two new judges take office
TWO NEW Supreme Court judges Ángela Russo and Cecilio Cedalise were sworn in by President Juan Carlos Varela on Monday Jan 4 for a 10 year period.
They were approved by the National Assembly in a special session in December.
Russo was designated to be a judge of the First Chamber of the Court, and Cedalise will be a judge in the Third Chamber.
The new judges replaced Harley Mitchell and Nelly Cedeño, who in turn replaced Victor Benavides, who resigned during a corruption investigation.
“I receive this new challenge with honor and dignity. My commitment to democracy and transparency is second to none and I will resolved cases respecting the Constitution, the law and national and international conventions. With confidence, responsibility and independence, I will contribute to restore credibility in the justice system,” said Russo.
Cedalise said that he will: “defend the constitution and rule with legal certainty. I’m ready to take on the challenge of honoring the trust bestowed upon me. Our people are thirsty for justice, and my job is to quench that thirst.
Varela said that he has “full confidence” in Russo and Cedalise.
“I ask you to put the Constitution and the laws of this country above personal interests,” he said.
