New bridge could see end of Albrook airport
THE WRITING is on the wall, or more appropriately, in the sky, for the future of the Marcos A. Gelabert International Airport in Albrook.
Civil Aviation authorities are analyzing the impact of the fourth bridge over the Panama Canal on operations at the airport, but the indications are that its future has a limited time span.
The fourth will be tendered by the Ministry of Public Works next year, will cost over $1 billion and will also carry the extended metro line to Arriajan.
According to Alfredo Fonseca Mora, administrator of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), there are currently no plans to make changes to the terminal since there is no space to do so.
Instead, a study is being done to move some of the operations to the facility in Panama Pacifico, home of the former US Howard Air base.
Fonseca Mora said that, right now, the construction of the fourth bridge will not affect the airport, but the final plans have not been released.
