OVER 40 YEARS after they were evicted from their land for the construction of a hydroelectric project indigenous people will receive of $2.6 million compensation.
Panama’’s Cabinet Council has instructed the Ministry of Economy and Finance to make the payment to those displaced by the construction of the Bayano hydroelectric project in 1972.
The decision is based on a ruling by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, which determined that the state violated the rights of indigenous groups by evicting them from the land.
