Panama lists over 30 teenage deliveries every day
IF ALL Panama’s teenage girls who gave birth from 2013 to July 2015 were to arrive with their offspring at the Rod Carew Stadium at the same time, they wouldn’t be able to fit in.
Reports from the Ministry of Health show that in that time period there were 27,374 teenage pregnancies, an amount similar to the total capacity of the Stadium, and that’s not counting cases handled by Social Security or private clinics.
Every day, the health authorities record an average of 29 deliveries, a rate of one every 49 minutes.
According to the parameters of the World Health Organization, a teen pregnancy is one which occurs between 10 and 19 years of age.
Official documents show that 43.3 percent of these cases were in the province of Panama.
