Fastest Man in Panama wins in Shanghai
THE FASTEST man in Panama, sprinter Alonso Edward, won the 200 meters event in the International Athletics Federation Diamond League meeting in Shanghai, China, on Sunday May 17, and became the first Panamanian to become eligible for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Edward won with a time of 20.33 seconds, followed by Jamaicans Julian Forte (20.36) and Nickel Ashmeade (20.44), In 2009 he clocked 19.81 for in an athletic meeting in Berlin, Germany, where he was defeated by Usain Bolt of Jamaica.
The minimum time required for the Olympic event is 20.50 seconds, according to Camilo Amado, president of the Olympic Committee of Panama. Olympic qualifying marks came into force on May 1this year
The next Diamond League event is on May 29 in the United States
Edward also plans to compete in the Pan American Games in Toronto in July.
