OFF THE CUFF: Suspended university prof back in class
LIFETIME ACTIVIST, University professor, and highly regarded constitutional expert, Miguel Antonio Bernal is back where, when not leading protest parades, or battling authoritarianism, he feels most at home … in front of a class of students at the University of Panama(UP).
The Academic Council of the University on Monday May 4, unanimously, acted on the orders of the Supreme Court of Justice and lifted the suspension they had imposed on Bernal who has been teaching their for 40 years and recently initiated an audit of the university’s books.
Since March 11, Bernal had been suspended for five years of the UP, without pay.
On Thursday April 30 the court ordered the authorities of the home of higher learning to suspend the proceedings against Bernal.
The Supreme Court had warned the UP that failure to comply with the order could lead to penalties for contempt pursuant to Article 2632 of the Judicial Code.
Civil groups, students, lawyers, and fellow teachers welcomed the court’s decision.
