Sex trade workers petition gets cool reception
PANAMA SEX trade workers under the banner The Organization of Women’s Dignity and Rights of Panama (MDD) have petitioned President Juan Carlos Varela to make moves to regulate the activity so they can receive employee benefits.
June 2 is the International Day of Sex Workers, but their overture got a cool reception from at least one civil society representative “This proposal is absurd and meaningless,’ said Gloria Griffin
“We are against it because the request promotes what is known as white slavery” she said while regulating the activity does not guarantee that the captives are freed.
The Secretary General of the Ministry of Labor and Workforce Development (Mitradel), Samuel Rivera, was surprised by the request of the women and said that there is no regulation for sex work in the Panamanian Labor Code but added that if they worked under an employment contract, the situation would be different.
