OFF THE CUFF: Errant drivers and the cost of living

LIFE for errant drivers in Costa Rica automatically gets more expensive each year as fines rise in line with the cost of living, but starting January 1 there will be a quantum leap for drunk drivers with the introduction of a $550 penalty.

In Panama those who like to tipple before they get behind the wheel face fines starting at $75 depending on the breathalyzer reading.
Unlike the neighboring country, Panama fines do not increase automatically each year, unless the Transit Authority and Land Transport (ATTT) publish a new decree. For Ticos all traffic fines will rise 4.95%, in the coming year, in line with the consumer price index, reports Costa Rica’s La Nacion.
