Panama needs rest from politics -Varela
PANAMANIANS “must rest from politics said” President Juan Carlos Varela on Tuesday. November 4 announcing that he has not yet decided the date of the recall of the National Assembly for an extraordinary session.
The session is being called to pass the 2015 budget and appoint a new Attorney General and Comptroller.
The terms of both the officials, appointed by ex-president Ricardo Martinelli ,expire at the end of the year. The appointments are being closely monitored by civil society wary of appointments linked to political parties. Varela has said he has three people on a short list for Attorney General, and there is a long list of candidates who want to be the country’s Comptroller. The outgoing comptroller had worked for Martinelli for 17 years before being named to the job. She has been attacked for slowing big overruns on government projects and was earlier called before the Assembly to explain her actions.
