Another canal expansion lock on the move
THE THIRD of the eight gates for the Pacific locks that are part of the expansion of the Panama Canal was moved on Tuesday, November 4 from the Gatún area to Cocolí.
The Crowley 455-4 barge, which carried the gate, bedecked with the national colors to mark the independence celebrations went through the Gatún locks, then through the Pedro Miguel and Miraflores locks reports La Prensa.
The expansion project is reportedly 81 percent complete.
The gate is 22 meters high, 57 meters long, eight meters wide and weighs 2,300 tons.
The new locks of the Panama Canal will have 16 gates, eight on each side of the Canal.
