Colon abused kids lacking shelter, food

A SHORTAGE of shelters for abused children in Colón, is causing   increasing concern among officials with the Ministry of Social Development.

The region boasts some centers for this purpose, but they are overcrowded and have shortages of food and other supplies reports La Prensa
The concern is that the government is not able to protect victims of domestic violence, said prosecutor Elsa Arosemena.
Ministry Regional Director Denise Atkinson said plans are being made to construct a new shelter and to make improvements to existing facilities, including the SOS Children’s Villages, The Dr Eno Home and the San Vicente de Paul Home.
The ministry recently held a meeting with a number of other agencies to discuss the issue and to set the goal of giving protection and accommodation for 24 hours to minors who are involved in domestic violence cases.
