Judge in scandal uproar claims political persecution

Embattled Supreme Court Judge Alejandro Moncada Luna, said he will not resign his office and said he is a victim of political persecution by the current government.

 The news was delivered by the judge at a press conference at the headquarters of the country’s highest court reports La Prensa.
The conference occured a week after La Prensa revealed that the judge bought two apartments for $ 1.7 million since he took office. One of them was purchased for cash.
Meanwhile fellow Supreme Court Judge Harry Diaz, said Moncada Luna told him that he owned a beach house in Buenaventura. The house was allegedly acquired fromRicardo “Ricky” Calvo.

The businessman and former Vice President Felipe “Pipo” Virzi was also mentioned. He said that in 2012, when he was president of the Court – Virzi donated two acres of land in Santiago for the construction of the “judicial town” in Veraguas province. He did not see harm in Virzi making him a personal loan of $700,000, without interest, because “[Pipo] lends money to many people,” including companies like Super 99 and Varela Hermanos.

“Everything is in God’s hands. My counsel is God,” he told the press conference. “I do not have two apartments. Currently I have one where I live and another being built,” he added. 

Moncada Luna, who in the military dictatorship was secretary of the Interior Minister, José Rodolfo “Popito” Chiari, who censored various media including La Prensa said he was now suffering “political persecution.”
“This is something political The Government is seeking the head of a judge. Today officials from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, went to my house ” he added. Later he told reporters that they flocked to his residence the previous day, looking for his wife María del Pilar.
“It’s a pressure to my wife and my family. The Government is pushing and chasing and making false accusations. I have all the evidence to refute it,” he said. However,he did not show a single document or evidence.
“I’m going to wait to submit the application in the Assembly.,” he continued.
“I do not know if later they will be going against another judge,” said Moncada Luna, during his appearance reiterating his view that the information is an intrusion of the Executive.
“I do not know where my statement [of assets] is. l just know that has not been lost,” he continued.
Ana Beatriz Bouche, ex lawyer and former confidante of Moncada Luna, testified under oath that, on instructions, it fell to her to prepare the financial statement of her now former boss, and it listed only a 2005 4X4 truck and a gold Rolex like “President” watch Nothing more. The statement has been reported missing from a notary’s files.
