Water crisis: massive distribution to Azuero schools, homes
DISTRIBUTION of 22,000 bottles of water to 91 educational facilities in Chitre, Guararé, Los Santos and Las Tablas began on Sunday, September 21, following the earlier delivery to hundreds of homes affected by the warning not to use water from local treatment plants.
The Regional Director of Education Herrera, Maria Avila Pose, said that in the district of Chitre alone distribution of bottled water reached 51 educational institutions, including nursery schools, boarding schools and universities.
On Friday evening, Health Minister Francisco JavierTerrientes, announced that water from the Chitre and Los Santos water treatment center should not be consumed, after detecting an increase in the levels of the herbicide atrazine which was at 13 parts per billion.
Posan indicated that this amount was only enough reach to restart classes on Monday September22 and delivery has not been coordinated delivery for other days.
In the province of Los Santos 1,287 boxes with 12 bottles in each were distributed
to 40 schools to the districts of LosSantos and Guararé.
José Donderis, director general of the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) said on Sunday that a simultaneous distribution of water was made to community boards.
He said that the latestwater samples, now being tested daily, indicated a lower level of atrazine.
“The trend is downward, but it will be the Health Minister who will announce the figures.” he said.
