Legal help for ex spy chief if she surrenders
COLOMBIAN Attorney General Eduardo Montealegre on Wednesday July 2, offered legal assistance to former Intelligence Director Marí¬a del Pilar Hurtado, a fugitive living under asylum in Panama, if she surrenders to authorities.
Hurtado fled Colombia after being charged with spying on judges, opposition politicians and journalists.
“If Hurtado wants to come to Colombia, explain the facts, and collaborate with prosecutors by telling the truth of what happened, we are ready to collaborate with her so that the truth is known,” Montealegre said in an interview with Caracol Television.
Montealegre also said that once the ruling of the Panama Supreme Court revoking Hurtado’s asylum is confirmed, he will apply for her extradition and have Interpol issue an international alert for her.
The asylum granted to Hurtado in 2010 by Panama was declared unconstitutional on May 29 by the Supreme Court.
Panama denied a request for extradition before that court decision, but is expected to review the case in light of the judgment.
