At least 500 workers left their jobs 7 a.m. on Friday, June 27, after the company suspended operations over a labor dispute.
Rodolfo Sanjur, leader of the workers’ union, said that the workers left the site only after company officials issued a formal statement certifying that they had not lost their jobs.
“The current contract is being maintained,”said Sanjur. However, he made it clear that workers will remain in a state of alert. He added that the company must continue responding with payments. reports La Prensa.
The closing announced Thursday by the company was apparently due to a work stoppage Tuesday and Wednesday Now, the union and the company must meet and resolve the issue before operations can be resumed, said Sanjur.
The only people left at the project are administrative staff and security guards. Minera Panama said that the decision to suspend operations was based on the country’s labor laws, and that the site will reopen only when they have implemented systems and processes that will enable it to operate as a world-class project.
