Hoisting a free glass during the World Cup
THE WORLD CUP is boom time for many Panamanian restaurants where fans gather to cheer on their national team or, when it has been eliminated, a second choice.
No hostelry enters into the swing of things as whole heartedly as Rincon Aleman on Calle 51, which for the third time is the designated headquarters for celebrating the German team’s attempt to win the holy grail of football.
Mein host, Fritz Schmutte is a dedicated fan, known for his special promotions and deals when events like the Eufa Cup, or major league events are being aired, but for the World Cup, life at the restaurant centers around the world’s most watched sporting event.
Regulars know that when Germany is playing there is a free quality German beer on the house for all present when the national team scores a goal and with the first game due on Monday, June 16, his hopes are high for a German victory but hopefully not with such a devastating result as Holland’s 5-1 humiliation of the reigning Champions, Spain. But high or low score, there will be the free fill up for all those ready to raise a glass to the German team.
The opening game is against Portugal, and a classic German beer brewed by Bitburger, the official sponsors of the German team will be served in a souvenir tankard and, as an additional bonus the purchasers of three beers during the game (kick off 11 am) get to keep the receptacle.
The next two fixtures will be Germany vs Ghana on Saturday June 21 at 2 pm, Germany vs USA on Thursday June 26 at 11 am.
And if all goes well for Germany in the group stages, there will be at least one more event in the sudden-death play-offs.
