A new approach to media heralded for presidency

RELATIONS between Panama’s incoming government and the media will have a non-confrontational flavor when TVN Channel 2, journalist and presenter Castalia Pascual takes over as presidential spokeswoman for Juan Carlos Varela,

She said on the Channel 2 “Radar” program, aired on Sunday June 15 that she set conditions for accepting the position offered her by the president-elect.

Pascual said that she demanded respect for free speech, free access to information, the cessation of threats and censorship of journalists in the country and asked that journalists not be seen as an enemy when questioning officials.
"There's a job to do and be assured that I will be there to ensure access to the press," said the correspondent for CNN in Spanish in Panama.
She said she accepted the post of residential spokesperson ass a challenge that will allow her to grow as a person and professional, but will will return to the media once hier term as presidential spokesperson expires.

The journalist, 42, believes that there are other professionals that are working with the government and what should be clear is that there is a line between handling communication for the state and being part of a political party.

“If I have to correct the President when I feel he is not doing well or not doing what he promised to get where he is, I will.
She said she was surprised by the offer of Varela to fill the position and denied ever having any kind of friendship with the president-elect.
Pascual said “It is an opportunity to challenge myself "and the timing is right for me to take that step”
