ELECTION: Carter Center knocks use of state resources, inefficient prosecutor
THE CARTER CENTER, on Monday April 5, became the third body to attack the use of state resources in Panama’s electoral campaign which,in spite of all, ended in defeat for the government presidential candidate.
The Carter Center, established in 1982 by former U.S. President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Jimmy Carter congratulated the Electoral Tribunal ( TE ) but questioned the use of state resources , inequity in access to the media the negative "tone" of the campaign and the "absence and inefficiency " of the Electoral Prosecutor’s office.
" The time is ripe for the various social , political and institutional actors to reflect on the measures and reforms needed to ensure that future elections are conducted on more equitable terms; more transparency in funding and campaign expenditure , as well as access to the media , with greater transparency and control over the abuse of state resources and the strict enforcement of the ban on public authorities to participate in electoral politics, among other key issues , said "the Carter Center in a bulletin released Monday May 5.
The Carter Center team, was invited to Panama by the Electoral Tribunal, but were not classified as Observers.
