5.2 earthquake in Chiriqui

A STRONG earth tremor measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale was felt in Chiriqui.  at 8:35 am on Saturday, April 19 raising concern among residents.
A tremor measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale was recorded three days before,
According to preliminary reports from the Institute of Geosciences of the University of Panama (UP), the Saturday quake was at depth of 5.6 kilometers.
Authorities conducted monitoring in the province, but no damage was detected.
Many earthquakes are recorded in Chiriqui because the area is crossed by active faults said Eduardo Camacho , director of the Geosciences Institute..
He said that the last destructive earthquake in western Chiriqui occurred on Christmas Day, 2003 . "Earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 7 occurred in 1879 and 1934, the latter with a magnitude of 7.6 ," he said.
Camacho said that the earthquakes that have occurred in the last week are considered moderate .
