Reservoir levels nearing crisis point

WITH water levels at Fortuna, Panama’s largest capacity dam and the Bayano reservoir dropping towards minimum operating levels, business organizations and local entrepreneurs are wondering when the government is going to recognize a potential impending power crisis.

Fortuna hydroelectric dam, on Friday, April 4, was only 9.5 meters above the minimum level to operate, putting more pressure on the country's generation system.

A similar situation occurs in the  Bayano, reservoir which is just4.5 meters above the minimum operating level.
Despite the low level of both reservoirs, the hydroelectric system is using water right now instead of conserving it to use later, reports La Prensa.
Although the government ordered saving measures, energy demand has remained at 400,000 megawatts.
